Total prohibition isn’t the objective: Govt tells HC

Kochi: The state government on Wednesday informed the Kerala High Court that not total prohibition but bringing down the level of alcohol consumption is its aim.

It is quite natural to impose changes in liquor policy, the government added.

The statement was made during the hearing of the appeal filed by the bar owners.

After announcing that the licences of bars would not be renewed, many including the CM, had said that the government wants to impose prohibition in a phased manner. Now the government is backtracking from this stance.

Senior lawyer Kapil Sibal represented the government and the hearing will be continued in the following days.

Outfits, including the KCBC, have come out against the change in government’s stance.

Meanwhile, Excise Minister K Babu told media persons that the licences of the bars in the state would be renewed according to the court verdict.
